tests/page-unit.js loads the built index.html script into the stub DOM page-smoke.js uses and
calls its helpers directly with node:test: escaping, times and sizes, file kinds, an untitled
item's name, the directory's sorts, filter words, DeadAir's playlist address. Top-level consts
are not properties of the vm context, so each check evaluates its expression in it.

Docker runs a healthcheck with exec, and containerd puts each exec's state in XDG_RUNTIME_DIR,
/run/user/0 on Tower, which elogind removes when root's last session ends. Every check then
failed and every container showed unhealthy while all of them answered. The checks are gone from
the sample compose file and production's; ipx's library counts for /metrics, which only the
healthcheck's status call refreshed, are counted every 30 s by the daemon.

Each release is now a Gitea release as well as an image: scripts/release.sh takes the binary (or
the page's files) out of the deployed image, checks its version, and attaches it as a tarball with
the changelog section as the notes.

The zone is in Cloudflare and the rays-unraid tunnel routes the name to ipx-directory, as it
does ipx-dir.sdf1.net, which keeps answering until every server using it has moved: a redirect
to another host would drop the Authorization header. Production ipx shares with the new name.
CLAUDE.md, docs/directory.md, the prod-check skill and the dashboard name it; the admin page's
placeholder and the settings' hint use directory.example.net.

The workspace stops holding one version. ipx keeps 0.12.1-dev and its vX.Y.Z tags; the directory
starts at 0.1.0-dev, tagged directory-vX.Y.Z, and the page at 0.1.0-dev in package.json, tagged
web-vX.Y.Z, which web/build.mjs gives the script for the logo's tooltip beside ipx's. crates/feed
is a library, not released. CLAUDE.md's release steps are for one service at a time.

CHANGELOG.md moves to crates/ipx/CHANGELOG.md with its history, which until 0.12.0 was all of
ipx's; web/CHANGELOG.md and crates/directory/CHANGELOG.md start with this release's lines for the
page and the directory. The dashboard's lines go: monitoring is not a service anyone uses.
CLAUDE.md says which file a change goes in, and that a release covers each.

Caddy's tracing directive, switched by WEB_TRACING so a server without a collector does not log
a failed export every few seconds. It continues an incoming traceparent (the page starts one per
tap, #190) and passes it to ipx, so a request is one trace from the browser through Caddy into
ipx, and Caddy's access log carries its traceID. Checked against Tempo with a probe container:
service.name and deployment.environment.name come from the OTEL_ variables, over OTLP/HTTP.

web/build.mjs builds a static site, web/dist, with the icons and typeface
beside the pages; Dockerfile.web serves it with Caddy, which passes /api
and /media to ipx on the same origin, so cookies, live updates and
Cloudflare Access work as before. ipx serves no page any more: build.rs
and every include_str! of the web files are gone, and its image is built
without node.
What ipx did to the page as it served it is kept another way. Caddy asks
ipx before serving a page (forward_auth): /api/page-check sends a browser
not signed in to /login and a non-admin away from /admin, and refuses them
/admin.js; /api/login-check sends someone Access vouches for past the
form; a page asked for with ?token= goes to /api/signin, which sets the
cookie. The theme and the admin link, once written into the page per
person, are set by web/boot.js in <head> from the theme cookie and the
last visit, before the first frame, and /api/me brings the version and
the account's theme from before.
Caddy strips the Cf-Access-* headers from every peer but TUNNEL_PEER, the
address cloudflared's requests come from, which is the boundary
trusted_proxies drew; ipx then trusts only Caddy's address.
The browser suite runs Caddy in front of its daemon, so it tests what
production would run. Not deployed: production's cutover is on #203.

A new crate and service, crates/directory, live at ipx-dir.sdf1.net. ipx
servers send the public feeds their people subscribe to (POST /v1/snapshot,
replacing what that token sent before); the directory fetches each feed's
title, artwork, category, description and latest twenty items every six
hours with ipx-feed, and lists them A to Z and by subscribers summed over
every server. It holds metadata only, never a file or a file's address.
Tokens are in its config file as SHA-256 hashes, each ro, rw or rwa, and
the file is read again within a minute of a change, so adding and revoking
one is an edit and nothing else; a revoked token takes its server's counts.
At first they were to come from environment variables, which would have
meant recreating the container to add one. A file that does not load keeps
the tokens as they were.
Every address sent is checked with ipx_feed::url_looks_private, the check
ipx makes before sending, so one server's miss does not publish a paid feed
to every other; an rwa token can remove and block what both miss.
Deployed: ipx-directory in the ipx Arcane project, database ipx_directory
(its own login) on the databases project's Postgres, which db-backup
already covers, and a tunnel route with no Access in front. The store's
tests run on Postgres as well as SQLite when IPX_TEST_DATABASE_URL is set.

The first step of the split (#207). The daemon moves to crates/ipx unchanged;
feed.rs becomes crates/feed (ipx-feed), which the directory service (#204)
will share for its metadata refresher and its privacy check.
To stand alone, fetch takes the feed's address and its credentials instead
of ipx's config::Feed (config::Feed::auth gives them), collect_outlines
moves in with the OPML parsing, and the address half of looks_private is
feed::url_looks_private. ipx imports the crate as `feed` at its root, so
every crate::feed path is unchanged. The version is the workspace's, in the
root Cargo.toml.
Checked: cargo test on Postgres (118 + 29), tsc, page smoke, native bridge,
contrast and Playwright (72) pass; the image built from the new Dockerfile
is deployed and healthy.

Production moved from the content project, beside audiobookshelf, immich and
Plex, to a project called ipx, where the frontend and directory of the split
(#207) will join it. The move changed ipx's network, and sign-in through the
tunnel trusts that network's gateway: the new compose file pins the subnet to
192.168.64.0/20 so the gateway stays 192.168.64.1 if the network is remade,
and config.toml's trusted_proxies names it instead of 192.168.16.1. Checked
by sending a forged Access token from a Docker bridge: it reached the token
check and was refused, which only a trusted peer does.
The repo's compose file was a copy of production's that nobody else could
run. It is now a sample: ipx alone, SQLite, folders beside the file.

Bookworm's ffmpeg is 5.1.9, two major versions behind, and DeadAir runs
everything through it. Both stages move, since the binary built in the
first has to find the same glibc in the second.
Checked in the new image on techpod-358 with a 643-term drop expression,
the size that failed with a bsf_list error on 5.1 today: the copy is
352.73s shorter, as 643 cuts of 21 frames at 26.122ms predict, and
decodes without errors.

SeaORM gives a SQLite pool one connection unless told otherwise, and connect() did not say, so
every request, every scan write and every read went through it in turn. Twenty-five people
browsing in the load tests (#133) got 50 requests a second out of 12 cores, the fastest answers
in 3-30ms and the medians ten times that.
SQLite now gets eight. In WAL readers run beside the one writer. Every transaction here writes
first, so it takes the write lock or waits out the busy timeout for it; SQLite refuses at once
only a transaction holding a snapshot a write has moved past, and none here does. Db::memory
switches its file to WAL too, as Db::open does, so the tests share it as the daemon does. A test
holds a write open and reads beside it, and fails with one connection.
The same browsing: a feed's items at p95 10ms where it was 133, a search 22 where 119, the feed
list 89 where 242. The load tests' SQLite budgets are tightened to match; the Rust tests take
2.8s where they took 7.5.

node tests/load/run.js --postgres puts the scratch daemon in IPX_TEST_DATABASE_URL, the database
the Rust tests already use on Postgres, ipodderx_test on the databases project's server, in a
schema of its own, ipx_load, dropped and made again each run as /tmp/ipx-load is wiped. The URL
is in /src/.envrc, taken from ipx.env. It is production's server and role, so the harness refuses
a database whose name does not end in _test, and hands psql the password in its environment,
where no other process on Tower can read it. psql comes from /src/install.sh.
After seeding it runs ANALYZE: a schema filled seconds before has no planner statistics until
autovacuum gets there, which it did partway through a test, and the search's p95 swung between
40ms and 166ms from run to run. Analyzed first, three runs gave 37-38ms.
Each budget now has a value for each database, about twice what it measures on Tower: Postgres
answers the feed list at p95 54ms to SQLite's 242, having no one connection to queue for (#136).
Running it found #140.

The browser tests drive one person against a handful of feeds, one request at a time, and cannot
show what production's load does. node tests/load/run.js builds a release binary, serves 1,500
generated feeds from itself, starts a daemon of its own under /tmp/ipx-load, seeds a hundred
listeners with thirty feeds each and four downloaded files, and runs four k6 scripts, with
`ipx status` -- the healthcheck -- run every second and failing the run at its 5s timeout:
browse 25 people at once: feed list, All Subscriptions, a feed, a search, the Directory,
a feed's page in it
listening 100 players saving positions every second and marking items read while scans write;
each reads its own state back, which must be as it left it
media 50 listeners seeking: every range checked byte for byte against the served file
signin a flood of wrong passwords while others browse, and the gap between refusing a
known name and an unknown one
Each budget is about twice what it measures now. Getting here found #135 (SQLite waiting for the
disk after every write, a first scan of 1,500 feeds estimated at 50 minutes, now 27s), #136
(SQLite's single connection, left open), #137 and #138 (fixed in the commit before this). k6 is
installed from its own signed apt repository by /src/install.sh, outside this repository.

A feed's page in the Directory (#128) had its cover, category and latest items, but not the
feed's own description, which Apple's show page leads with: iPX read every item's description
and threw the channel's away, and the feeds table had nowhere to keep it.
It is parsed now, RSS's <description>, or iTunes' summary when that is empty, or Atom's
subtitle, kept in feeds.description (kept when a later read has none, as title and image are),
and sent, sanitized, with the items from /api/directory/{id}, which is now an object, not a
list. The page shows it as plain text under the header, three lines of it, with More when there
is more. A description that only repeats the title is left out.
feeds.description is the first column added to a table that already exists. create_missing
looks for it with a SELECT and runs the ALTER only when it is missing, since it runs on every
open, the healthcheck's included, and an ALTER's lock is what made that time out before. The
same once-only step forgets every feed's ETag and Last-Modified: a feed is read whole only when
it has changed, so its description would otherwise wait for its next item.

From Dash0's structured logging guide, what applies here:
- Each JSON line inside a traced span ends with its trace_id and span_id, so a line in Loki leads
to its trace in Tempo; the access log is written inside its request's span so it has one too.
The JSON formatter takes no extra fields, so WithTrace appends them to the object it writes.
- A feed or download failure carries error.type (the HTTP status, or dns, redirect_loop,
timeout, ...) and http.response.status_code, from failure_kind beside explain_failure, so
failures group by kind without a regex over msg.
- Each event was logged twice: words under ipx::scan and fields under ipx::io. It is now one
line under ipx::scan with both; the wire copy is at debug, for the admin page's Daemon I/O tab,
and out of production's log. The healthcheck's status reply stays under ipx::io.
- The access log's ms is duration_ms. The dashboard and the prod-check skill follow.
- error fields are Display with the anyhow chain everywhere, not a mix of Debug and Display.

The log was text, so the Grafana dashboard picked lines apart with
regular expressions, and a change of wording would have blanked its
panels. With IPX_LOG_FORMAT=json each line is one JSON object: the
access log carries method, path, route, status and ms as fields (the
route passed from the routing layer in the response's extensions), and
each wire event its ev, feed, new, downloaded, failed, bytes, msg and
the rest (log_wire), beside the old message. The two startup lines that
were println! are logged, so no line breaks the JSON. Text stays the
default, for a terminal. The dashboard reads the fields with Loki's json
parser, and groups requests by route rather than path.

Built on what the monitoring project already collects: the container's
log in Loki (through Alloy) and the traces in Tempo. It parses the
access log and the event log's wire JSON, so there are no metrics to
add to ipx: what is waiting and downloaded (from the healthcheck's
status), new items, downloads and bytes, failing feeds and downloads,
requests by status and response time, the slowest and busiest paths,
recent and slow traces, and the log. Provisioned from a file, so it is
regenerated here, not edited in Grafana.

Production ran four commits past v0.9.0 while the logo's tooltip said
0.9.0, because Cargo.toml's version only moved at a release. It is now
0.9.1-dev, and CLAUDE.md's release steps end by moving to the next -dev
version. No commit hash: the name says there is newer work, and git says
which.

The app, the repository (rays/ipx), the image, the compose service and
container, and the data folders on Tower take the new name. What stays:
the 2004 iPodderX and ipodderx-core, which are history; the Postgres
database and login, and ipodderx.sdf1.net with its Access and Authentik
apps, which would each need moving outside this repo; and the first-start
password, as ipx is shorter than the eight characters a password needs.

CarPlay and Android Auto cannot render a web view. Both are template
surfaces, and the only audio they will control is the host's own AVPlayer
or ExoPlayer -- so an app that is "the web UI plus CarPlay" is really "the
web UI whose audio engine is native", and the page had no way to give
playback away.
web/src/native.ts replaces the playback surface of the page's media element
with one that forwards to the host and synthesises the events back. Nothing
in player.ts changes: it only ever speaks to the element, so the player bar,
the row buttons, the EQ bars and the keyboard shortcuts keep working as they
did. Video stays in the page, since CarPlay is audio-only and a native video
layer under a web view buys nothing. In a browser none of it installs.
Position and read are the host's to write. player.ts has been bitten before
by a stale position -- one left paused in another tab saved its older place
over where you had got to -- and a backgrounded web view is exactly that
tab: frozen, holding a time from minutes ago, while the host plays on. So
the beacon becomes a request for the host to save its own clock.
tests/native-bridge.js is what holds the two ends together, and it earned
its place immediately: the src setter called removeAttribute('src'), which
the shim's own override turned into a stop() that switched it back off one
line after enabling it. Silent, and only visible in a car. The stub DOM
moved to tests/dom-stub.js so that test and page-smoke share one harness
rather than two copies.

tea comment, run without a terminal, waits on stdin and never exits. The example this file gave had the same problem.

On Tower the host sees the processes inside containers, so the
pkill -x ipx that CLAUDE.md recommended would have killed production's
daemon in the iPodderX container along with the test one. CLAUDE.md now
says to stop a hand-run daemon by its own PID; docs/cli.md keeps
pkill -x for a plain install and warns about the container case.

The proxy sign-in believed Cf-Access-Authenticated-User-Email from any
address in trusted_proxies. On Tower that address is the Docker gateway,
so any container there could name itself anyone (docs/sso.md said as
much, and CLAUDE.md listed it as a known gap).
With [web] access_team and access_aud set, a proxied request must also
carry a Cf-Access-Jwt-Assertion that verifies against Cloudflare's keys
(RS256 only, this application's audience, the team's issuer, not
expired), and the name comes from its email claim. The keys are fetched
at start and again when a token names an unseen key, at most once a
minute, so made-up key ids cannot make every request a request to
Cloudflare. While the keys cannot be had, proxied sign-in is refused;
password and token sign-in are unaffected. Both settings empty, nothing
changes.
jsonwebtoken does the checking, on the aws-lc-rs backend already in the
tree through rustls. Tests sign with throwaway keys in tests/data: a
valid token, another app's audience, expired, a forged signature, HS256,
alg none, the refetch limit, and keys that cannot be fetched. Checked
live on a scratch daemon: the header alone and a forged token got 401,
the admin token still signed in.
vouched_name takes the peer and headers rather than the request: a
&Request held across the new await made the auth middleware's future
unsendable, as a body is not Sync.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Substack puts a post's subtitle in <description> and leaves it out of
content:encoded, and body() took content:encoded alone, so the subtitle
was lost (a known gap in CLAUDE.md). A description is now shown above the
body, as <p><em>, when it is short plain text the body does not already
contain. Podcast feeds that repeat their notes in both, whole or cut short
with an ellipsis, are unchanged; the comparison is by words, since a tag
taken out of the body leaves stray spaces around punctuation.
Checked against Experimental History's feed (subtitles appear) and The
Daily's (notes in both fields, shown once). Entries are inserted with ON
CONFLICT DO NOTHING, so only posts first seen from now on get it.

Each in light and dark. The published palettes missed AA in 19 places,
mostly Solarized and Catppuccin Latte, so each failing colour is moved
the least distance, toward black or white, that clears every pair it is
drawn in. Solarized dark's base0 had to rise to base1 to read on base02,
so its dim sits between base2 and base1 to keep three steps of type.
tests/contrast.js checks every palette against the pairs the page draws,
and a border that matches the ground it sits on. Its first run caught
Classic's links at 3.7:1 on the source list and Modern's faint at 4.3:1
on inputs; both are tuned. A failed toast moves to --panel, since the
error colours are tuned for the page's grounds, not --raise.

Phase 3 of #18. Two tables: catalogue (each feed's config::Feed as JSON, so a
new feed setting needs no column) and settings (general: the five server
settings the admin page edits). config.toml keeps what is needed before the
database is reached, or decides who gets in: paths, [torrent], [web].
ipx still runs from one in-memory Config, assembled at start from both
(assemble_config). The eight places that saved config.toml and re-read it now
call Ctx::store_cfg, which writes the database and swaps the copy in memory; the
first-run web token, which is config.toml's, is written there.
The first start on a database with no catalogue imports config.toml's feeds and
settings in one transaction whose first insert is the settings row, so two ipx
starting at once cannot both import; it then trims config.toml, keeping the
original as config.toml.pre-database. After that, feeds written into the file are
ignored with a warning. copy-db skips it, and copies both tables.
Rehearsed on a clone of production's database with production's config: all 130
feeds imported, the file trimmed, and the feed list, settings and directory
identical to the live server's.
Postgres connections now ask for no notices. Every CREATE ... IF NOT EXISTS on an
existing table sends one, eleven per open; sqlx logs them, and
tracing-subscriber 0.3.23's per-layer filters then dropped the next line ipx
logged -- the import's own message went missing that way. Proved by toggling it.

It had grown past 1,700 lines, too large to be read or kept up. What it held --
what was wrong before a change and what it cost to find -- goes in commit
message bodies now, beside the change. CLAUDE.md says so; the README and the
changelog no longer point at it. It remains in git history.

/admin, with Server, Accounts and Log sections chosen by the URL's hash. The
server sends the page and /admin.js to admins only (anyone else asking for the
page goes back to the app, and the script is 403), and removes the header's link
to it from everyone else's page rather than hiding it. The API keeps refusing
all of it to non-admins as before.
Settings becomes personal: theme, OPML import and export, and the schedule and
download folder to read. The server fields, the Users dialog and the Log dialog
move out of dialogs.ts into admin.ts.
The CSS moves out of index.html into web/app.css, which both pages load as
/app.css?v=<hash>, served immutable like the scripts. The smoke test checks both
pages.
Closes#19.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
The page loaded its script inline. It now names /app.js?v=<hash> (login.js for
the sign-in page), the hash of the script's contents: the script is served
immutable for a year and the page no-cache, so a browser fetches the script
again only when a deploy changes it and so its name.
Also fixes a race in the mark-everything-read test: it waited on a badge that
was seldom 0 to begin with, so a mark-unread still in flight could land after
the read-all.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
- web/src/*.ts: the script that was inline in index.html and login.html, split along its
existing sections. Still one scope, concatenated in order, not modules.
- web/build.mjs strips the types, puts the script in the page and minifies it with swc;
build.rs runs it into OUT_DIR and web.rs include_str!s the result. 137 KB -> 106 KB.
- npx tsc -p . type-checks web/src, loosely; the handful of annotations it needed
change no behaviour.
- The Docker build installs node and swc (npm ci --omit=dev).
- Two list requests racing no longer let the older one win, and switching tabs clears
the selection it closes, which made a browser test flaky.
Closes#23, #24.

The worker runs one job at a time, and status was one of its jobs, so the
Docker healthcheck waited behind the startup scan (54 seconds of it after
the last deploy) and timed out at 5. Any scan or download longer than
three probes would have had a working daemon marked unhealthy. The socket
now answers status straight away; everything else still queues. A test
fills the queue and checks status comes back anyway.

Authentik is Cloudflare Access's OpenID Connect identity provider, not
something in the request path, and the tunnel's requests reach ipx from

there with how to undo it.

entries.read/flagged/position columns (migrate() removes them from older
databases), migrate_opml_children, the legacy interval_mins key, the

redundant logbuf visitors, unused page state and CSS, and the infer, dirs
and tokio-stream dependencies. The icon is served once as /icon.png instead
