DeadAir made a shortened copy of each episode with ffmpeg: as much disk
again as the original, one pause length for everyone, and a minutes-long
wait after the download. Seeking past silences instead was tried on an
iPhone and left about 1.3 s of nothing at every cut (#178).
Now it finds a file's silences once (silencedetect, plus ffprobe for
each frame's byte position) and stores a plan for each pause a person
can choose, 0.2 to 0.5 s: the cuts, and the frames kept as byte ranges
of the original. /media/{id}/deadair.m3u8 hands this person's plan out
as an HLS playlist of ranges of /media/{id}/deadair.mp3, the original.
Tested on iOS Safari first (#180): no gap at the cuts, plays locked,
seeks exactly, and needs no ID3 timestamp in front of each piece.
Other browsers get hls.js (1.6.19, the light build), loaded only when
needed. Not where canPlayType says it can play HLS: Chromium answers
"maybe" and then fails on MP3 ranges with "stream parsing failed", so
only Apple's browsers play the playlist themselves.
The pause is per person and per show, on deadair_prefs.pause_ms, 0.3 s
unless chosen; 0.2 s, what the copies left, made speech sound rushed.
AAC in MP4 has no ranges a playlist can use, so only MP3 and ADTS AAC
are shortened (the library is 803 MP3s and no .m4a). The copies, their
table and #179's expiry go: the first start drops the table and deletes
the files it names, only those named name.deadair.*.

For anyone who turns DeadAir on, a background task makes each episode a
copy with every silence quieter than -38 dB for over 0.35 s shortened to
0.2 s. Nothing is re-encoded: ffmpeg copies the original's frames and
leaves the silent ones out, about 11 s for an hour of MP3 in a release
build. On Brad & Will's episode 359 that is 520 cuts and 3.3 minutes
saved, the copy decodes clean, and it has no isolated spikes in its
silences that the original lacks.
Cuts are made from the middle of each silence, keeping 0.1 s at each
end, so the frames either side of a cut are silent: decoding blends a
frame with the one before it, and an MP3 frame can begin in the bytes of
the frame before, so the first frame after a cut decodes against the
wrong neighbour. Inside a silence nobody hears that; at a word they would.
Positions stay in the original's time and the server converts them both
ways. The iOS and Android apps save positions themselves from their own
player, even while the page is asleep, so converting in the page would
have stored the copy's times as the original's. /media/{id}/deadair
serves the copy at its own address and records that this person is
playing it; a position saved meanwhile is converted from the copy's
clock, as is the length a player measures.
The copy is made by a task of its own, not the worker: a first pass over
a library is hours of ffmpeg, and scans must not wait behind it. It
checks every two minutes, which covers new downloads, files already
downloaded, a switch turned on and a file downloaded again with one rule.
Episodes everyone who would hear the copy has finished get none.
download::remove deletes a copy with its original, and the quota counts
copies.
Settings: the switch is PATCH /api/me {deadair}, a feed kept out is
PATCH /api/feeds/{id} {deadair: false}. GET /api/me gives the switch and
deadair_saved, the seconds saved on episodes heard 75% or more on a copy,
each counted once. Three new tables, so no ALTER.
The image gains Debian's ffmpeg, about 480 MB, in a layer that stays
cached until the base image changes. The player's switch, the feed
setting and the stat come next, after mockups.

A torrent of several files is recorded as its folder. /media could not serve a folder, and the
reaper's remove_file failed on it, warned "could not delete" on every pass and freed nothing, so it
counted against the quota for good; Delete in the page failed the same way.
download::remove deletes a file or a whole folder, for the reaper and Delete alike, and the reaper
counts a folder by its recorded size, as a directory's own size is not its contents'.
download::playable answers the path itself, or for a folder the largest file in it, which is the
episode, and /media serves that.

The Directory showed a catalogue feed only once someone subscribed, and a feed left the
catalogue with its last subscriber, so nothing could be put there for others to find.
- A feed has a listed flag, set by ipx add --list (with --category for the Directory's chip).
The web page keeps a listed feed in the catalogue when its last subscriber leaves.
- The Directory lists every catalogue feed; Popular still only what people subscribe to.
popular() reads titles, artwork and categories through Db::feed_list, not three queries a
feed. Subscribing from the Directory scans the feed at once.
- A feed nobody subscribes to is checked once a day at most.
- clean_directory, in the sweep before each scan, removes from the catalogue and the database
a feed nobody subscribes to, with no file on disk and not from an OPML, that has failed for
30 days or published nothing in a year. Run against production first: it removes nothing.

Each person has a list for every feed they read and one per feed. An item whose title or text
holds one of the words, matched as whole words so "ai" does not hide everything that "said"
anything, is hidden from them and, since the scanner now keeps each subscriber's filters
separate, is fetched only if someone else still wants it.
Whole-word matching is not something LIKE can do on both SQLite and Postgres, so the matches are
worked out in Rust into a `hidden` table whenever a list changes, someone subscribes, or a scan
brings in new items, and the queries only look that table up. Both new tables are tables rather
than columns because create_missing adds tables but never columns. Hidden counts as read for
the reaper and for "others still want this file", since whoever it is hidden from is as done
with it.

Almost no blog names a category the Directory can use, so a feed can
carry one of its own in config.toml, set by an admin in the feed's
settings and used when the feed names none. The feed's own iTunes
category still wins. The field offers the categories the Directory
already shows, so a blog about games joins Games rather than starting a
second chip. Setting it on a feed from an OPML promotes it to config, as
any other shared setting does.
Closes#10.

Works through TODO.md from the 2026-09-12 over-engineering audit. Drops the
entries.read/flagged/position columns (migrate() removes them from older
databases), migrate_opml_children, the legacy interval_mins key, the
contrib/ systemd units, test-only Db wrappers, a duplicate token generator,
redundant logbuf visitors, unused page state and CSS, and the infer, dirs
and tokio-stream dependencies. The icon is served once as /icon.png instead
of inlined four times, taking about 94 KB off the two pages.
The adoption's subscription half was not dead: it gives a fresh install's
first admin the config's feeds. It stays as adopt_catalogue, now tested.

Blog feeds put each article's header image in an <enclosure>, so a text
feed read as a podcast full of episodes: 149 images, 74 MB across 11
feeds. media_types defaults to audio and video, with a per-feed override.
Such enclosures stay listed and stay downloadable by hand; the row names
what it is rather than saying "skipped". An unknown type is allowed, since
the real type is only known after downloading, and a torrent is allowed as
a container judged once unpacked.

A feed whose body sniffs as OPML is treated as a subscription list and
re-read on every scan, as iPodderX did. Listed feeds become real config
entries grouped under it, inherit its settings, land in one nested folder,
and are scanned in the same run.
When a feed leaves the OPML: removed if nothing was downloaded, kept and
flagged otherwise, so a downloaded file is never orphaned.
folder_for sanitized the whole folder string and would have flattened the
nesting; each segment is sanitized separately now, and a traversal still
cannot escape the download directory. Db::memory() also runs migrate(),
which it did not, so a migration-only column passed tests while missing in
production.

Splits the forbidden set: / \ | : were separating words, so they become
"-"; ? * < > " ' just go. Runs of dashes and spaces collapse to " - "
when the run held whitespace and to a bare "-" when it did not, so
"Show | Series" reads "Show - Series" while "AC/DC" stays "AC-DC".

A real feed titled with pipe separators produced a folder named
"Get in the Trunk Anthology Series Delta Green": removing a forbidden
character left the gap around it. Runs of whitespace now collapse, and
control characters map to a space rather than vanishing.

librqbit replaces the vendored BitTorrent 4.2.1 tree. Torrents download
in place because seeding serves the files it downloaded, so the planned
stage-then-move would have broken it. The stall budget now also covers
magnet metadata resolution, which otherwise never returns against a dead
swarm and wedged the scan.
Adds add/rm/import/export, tracing setup, systemd units and README.
A successful swarm download is unverified: no reachable peers here.

Streaming download with progress, content sniffing that replaces the
long-dead detectFileType(), HTML-body rejection, and placement by rename
from an incomplete dir on the same filesystem.
Filters are applied once at discovery and recorded in enclosures.state,
so the download queue is the table rather than the parse result and
max_new_per_check defers work instead of dropping it.
