Hovering a category tile turns its outer two covers further out over 0.2s. The user finds it choppy (2026-10-05). The covers carry a box-shadow and are only composited once the transition starts, and only two of the three move, so the fan opens in a jerk rather than as one motion.

Fixed in 5058adc: covers are composited before the hover (will-change), all three move, rotate and translate animate separately over 0.45s on an ease that settles. Chromium trace of one hover in and out: raster tasks 22 to 5, and the compositor presents 116 frames to the main thread's 26. Deployed 2026-10-05.
