On a phone, pulling the item list down to check for new items shows nothing once you let go: the note goes away at once, and the sidebar's scanning spinner is hidden on a phone. It is hard to tell the check started, so people pull again, repeatedly. Asked for: a spinner for a couple of seconds after the pull.

Fixed in 7490a3a: after a pull to refresh, a spinner shows at the top of the item list for a couple of seconds, so the check visibly started. Deployed.
