The page asks for the whole screen (viewport-fit=cover) and pads for the home indicator (#46) and the sides, but nothing reads safe-area-inset-top. Opened from the home screen, where iOS gives the page the top of the screen, the top bar's buttons, the reader's back button (the reader is fixed to the whole screen on a phone), the item beside it while swiping, and the top of the feed list sit under the Dynamic Island and the status bar. Plain Safari hides this, because its own bar sits above the page. Found while redrawing the phone layout (#53).

Fixed in 162665b: --safe-t (safe-area-inset-top) pads the top bar, the reader, the item beside it while swiping and the drawer, and sheets stop short of the top. Checked with the inset set to 59px by hand; still to be seen on a phone opened from the home screen. Deployed.
