On a phone-width screen the reader (#detail) is position:fixed over the item list. The swipe from #49 (web/src/gestures.ts, slide()) moves that one element with translateX and fades it to as little as 40% opacity, so as the finger drags, the list shows through the fading reader and in the strip it uncovers, and again while the next item slides in from the other side. It reads as the page falling apart rather than turning to the next item. Reported by the user.

Fixed in f2fde8c: on a phone the next or previous item sits beside the reader and comes across with it, the end of the list says 'No more items', and swiping right from the first item dims the list and draws the reader off it. A touch within 14px of the left edge is kept from Safari's Back. Deployed.
