Asked 2026-10-16: each Signal's settings let you pick an icon for it from the whole of Font Awesome Free (7.3.1, the set the page's own icons come from), searchable. It shows in place of the Signal's initials in the sidebar, on the Signals page and in the Signal's header.

Prototype on the signal-icons branch, for approval before it goes to main.

In the sidebar, a Signal with an icon shows it on its tile, tinted as initials are; one without keeps its initials (Baking). Glass dark, 390 px:

In the Signal's dialog, the tile beside the name is a button: it opens a search over all of Font Awesome Free 7.3.1 (2,883 icons, solid, regular and brands), by name and Font Awesome's search terms ("ai" finds the robot). Exact names come first, then search terms, then words that only start with what was typed. Initials goes back to none. Searching "car", Glass light and dark:

Modern, desktop:

Name
[🏁] [Formula 1 ] the tile opens the picker
[car ×] Initials
 🚗 🚙 🚡 🚘 ... (up to 120, scrolls)

How it is built: ipx-web serves each icon as its own SVG, /icons/<style>/<name>.svg, drawn as a CSS mask so it takes the theme's colour; the search index (about 90 KB compressed) is fetched only when the picker first opens. The API takes icon: "solid/robot" and nothing that is not a style and a plain name. Changing only the icon no longer has Jev read everything again: the dialog used to send the name, words and sentence back on every save, which dropped the Signal's verdicts.

Decisions that are yours:

  1. Where the picker lives: opened from the tile beside the name, inside the dialog, rather than a dialog of its own.
  2. Tile colour: the icon on the same tint its initials would have, so each Signal keeps its colour. No theme colours change.
  3. Shown in: the sidebar, the Signals page and the Signal's own header. Not on items.

Merged and deployed (ipx and ipx-web, 4f1e7e2): a Signal's icon from all of Font Awesome Free, picked from the tile beside its name. The folder's + now sits before its count.
