The page's part of DeadAir (#171), whose server side is deployed: nothing in the page turns it on yet.

Plan

  • A switch in each feed's settings, beside Download automatically, off until you turn it on. On a group (an OPML or a Patreon creator) it covers the group's feeds; a feed of the group can still be turned off on its own. PATCH /api/feeds/{id} {deadair: true|false|null}; the feed list gives each feed's deadair.
  • The same switch beside the speed control, for the feed of what is playing. State by icon shape and aria-pressed, no theme colours. Turning it on or off mid-episode saves where you are and carries on at the same spot in the other version; a copy not made yet is used from the next play.
  • Playing the copy: an enclosure the entries API gives deadair (seconds saved) plays from /media/{id}/deadair. Positions and lengths the API hands out are already in that copy's clock.
  • Time saved: on each episode that has a copy, and your running total (GET /api/me deadair_saved, episodes heard 75% or more on a copy, each once).
  • Mockups here for approval before merge.

Mockups for approval: real screenshots of the prototype on the deadair-ui branch (827cc74, 111a0e2), Glass dark at 390 px, on a fixture show with real audio. Not merged or deployed.

Player bar

Before, and with DeadAir off, then on. The button sits left of the speed. Off is outlined bars with the silence still in the middle; on is the same waveform solid with the gap closed up. No colour change, aria-pressed carries the state. It turns DeadAir on or off for the show that is playing, and carries on at the same place in the other version.

The list

An episode with a copy says how much shorter it is. Its length and time left are the copy's.

list

Settings

The time DeadAir has saved you, counting episodes heard three quarters of or more, each once. Before anything counts, it says where to turn DeadAir on.

Yours to decide

  1. The button beside the speed: keep it there, or only in the show's settings?
  2. The icon: a waveform whose gap closes. Or something else, such as scissors?
  3. "8 s shorter" on each episode: keep it, or leave the list as it was?
  4. Where the total lives: in Settings as shown, or somewhere you see more often?

New wording for the DeadAir switch and everything around it (00bc039 on deadair-ui). It leans on the name's own picture, dead air cut, rather than explaining it each time.

Where Before Now
Show settings Plays this show with long silences shortened, so episodes finish sooner without sounding sped up. Leave it off for readings whose pauses matter. Cuts the dead air: long silences in this show shrink to a beat, so episodes finish sooner and every voice keeps its own pace. Leave it off for stories whose pauses are part of the telling.
Button, off Turn on DeadAir for this show: long silences are shortened DeadAir: cut the dead air from this show
Button, on DeadAir is on for this show: long silences are shortened DeadAir is cutting the dead air from this show
Toast, copy not made yet DeadAir is on for this show. Each episode is shortened a few minutes after it downloads. DeadAir is on for this show. Episodes lose their dead air a few minutes after they download.
Settings, total It has saved you 3 h 12 min, on episodes you heard three quarters of or more. It has saved you 3 h 12 min of dead air, on episodes you heard three quarters of or more.
Settings, nothing yet Turn it on ... to shorten its long silences. Turn it on ... to cut the dead air from it.

Unchanged: the switch's label is the name alone, and each episode's line still says "8 s shorter", which is plainer than "8 s of dead air".

Approved as shown and deployed: merged to main at 00bc039 (827cc74 the page, 111a0e2 the icon, 00bc039 the wording). DeadAir is in each show's settings and beside the speed while a show plays, each shortened episode says how much shorter it is, and Settings shows the dead air it has saved you. Off for every show until you turn it on.
